Terms of Use
Last updated: 2026-05-05
Word of the Day (word-of-the-day.tbs-digital.com) is operated by TBS Digital, an independent studio in Bordeaux, France. By using this site you accept the terms set out below. If you do not accept them, please do not use the site.
1. Acceptance
Accessing any page on this site constitutes acceptance of these terms. That includes browsing words, using the archive, following links to external sources, or submitting the contact form. These terms apply to all visitors regardless of location.
We may update these terms. When we do, the "Last updated" date at the top of this page changes. Continued use of the site after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised terms. If a change is significant, we will note it briefly at the top of this page for 30 days after the revision.
2. Use of content
The definitions, etymologies, example sentences, editorial notes, and other written content on this site are the intellectual property of TBS Digital. They are free to read and free to link to. You may quote short passages — a definition, a sentence or two of etymology — for commentary, criticism, educational purposes, or personal reference, provided you attribute the source as "Word of the Day (word-of-the-day.tbs-digital.com)".
The following uses are not permitted without written permission from TBS Digital:
- Republishing the full text of a word entry (definition, etymology, examples, and anecdotes together) on another website or publication, whether commercial or non-commercial.
- Scraping the site programmatically to build a derivative database, dataset, or product. This includes automated crawling beyond what search engine bots do for indexing.
- Using the site's content to train machine learning models or large language models without a licence agreement.
- Presenting the site's content as your own original work without attribution.
Linking to individual word pages, the archive, or any other page on this site is always welcome and requires no permission.
3. Accuracy disclaimer
We curate each word entry carefully against authoritative sources — the Oxford English Dictionary, Merriam-Webster, Cambridge Dictionary, the Online Etymology Dictionary, and peer-reviewed linguistics references. We check every entry before publication. Despite this, vocabulary and etymology are areas where scholarly consensus evolves, sources sometimes disagree, and the historical record is incomplete for older words.
The content on this site is provided for general educational and informational purposes. It is not a substitute for professional lexicographic, linguistic, or legal advice. We make no guarantee that any definition, etymology, or usage example is accurate, complete, or current. If you are relying on a word's meaning for a professional, legal, or academic purpose, consult a primary source such as the OED or Merriam-Webster directly.
When we discover an error, we correct it and update the entry's last-modified date. If you spot something wrong, please use the contact form — we take corrections seriously and publish fixes quickly.
4. External links
Word of the Day links to external authority sources — dictionaries, encyclopaedias, academic publications, and other reference works — to help readers verify and deepen their understanding of each word. These links open in a new tab and are marked as external.
We do not control the content of external sites. A link from this site does not imply endorsement of the linked site's editorial position, commercial relationships, or practices. External sites may change their content, move pages, or cease to exist; we cannot guarantee that every external link remains live and accurate.
If an external link is broken or points to content that is no longer accurate, please tell us via the contact form.
5. Limitation of liability
This site is provided as-is, without warranty of any kind, express or implied. TBS Digital does not warrant that the site will be available at all times, that it will be free from errors, or that any content is accurate, complete, or fit for any particular purpose.
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, TBS Digital shall not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of, or inability to use, this site or its content. This includes but is not limited to damages arising from reliance on a definition or etymology that turns out to be incorrect. The maximum liability of TBS Digital for any claim arising from your use of this site is zero euros (€0), reflecting the fact that the site is provided as a free educational reference.
Some jurisdictions do not permit the exclusion of implied warranties or the limitation of liability for certain types of damages. If you are in such a jurisdiction, the limitations above apply to the maximum extent permitted by law.
6. Governing law
These terms are governed by the law of France. Any dispute arising from these terms or from your use of the site that cannot be resolved informally shall be submitted to the courts of competent jurisdiction in Bordeaux, France, unless mandatory consumer protection law in your country of residence requires otherwise.
7. Contact
